Abstract

The first publications in Estonian (published in 1771–1816) on the treatment of fractures did not contain terminology about the use of devices employed in the first aid for fractures. In 1857 O. A. Jannau used the term laha. The Estonian-German dictionary published by F. J. Wiedemann in 1869 provided the terms lahas (splint) and lahasesse panna (to splint). A number of later authors failed to acquaint themselves with Wiedemann’s dictionary and created their own terms, which were solely used by the authors themselves. B. Voogas (1925) and V. Sumberg (1932) introduced the terms lahas and lahastama (to splint) in generally informative medical writings. These terms have stood the test of time and have been used in scientific literature ever since. The development of scientific terms to denote the splinting of fractures took nearly 170 years.
