Abstract

The costs of providing the facility of a modern University animal house of 1,000 square metres usable area are analysed. These include capital expenditure on the building and its equipment, recurrent costs of the building’s services, staff and animals. Estimated total costs are £350,000 per annum. Building capital and recurrent costs represent approximately 50%, staff costs 30% and animal costs 20%. Thus, the University, as the central financing body, pays 80% of the cost of providing the facility for experimental work on animals.
