Abstract

The effect of softwood bedding (mixture of spruce and pine chippings) on the cytochrome P-450 enzymes in outbred Bom: NMRI mice has been examined. Following three days of exposure to softwood bedding the enzyme activity increases to approximately 140% of the activity of mice exposed to pure sand or beechwood bedding. The enzyme activity remains at this level during long-term exposure. The active substance found to be α-pinene is unacceptable in all experiments involving
enzymatic detoxification.
