Abstract

Vera Poska-Grünthal is very important in Estonian legal history. Focusing
on the rights of women and children, both in her legal work
and later career as a researcher, she also took an active role in the
process of drafting a new family law and published articles on equal
rights for women and men. As a mother of five children, she initiated
the foundation of several organisations in Estonia dealing with women
and children. As a representative of the first generation of female
lawyers, she not only participated in the local women networks, but
also established the International Federation of Women in Legal Careers
to cooperate the research on family law in international level.
Thus this study of the life and career of Vera Poska-Grünthal reveals
her awareness of the social and legal context, and the recognition of
the possibility to contribute to the reforms. Her leading role in the
legal academy remains inspiringly significant also for the new generation
of women in law and legal science.
