Teaching mathematics as a way of thinking – not calculating

Matemaatilise mõtlemise tähendusrikkad aspektid on uurimine, kahtlemine, süsteemne töö, visualiseerimine, hüpoteeside püstitamine, oma seisukohtade selgitamine, üldistamine, põhjendamine ja tõestamine, aga mitte rangete protseduuride teostamine, mida teevad kas masinad või mida peetakse "madalama taseme" mehaaniliseks tegevuseks. Siinses essees keskendutakse matemaatilisele mõtlemisele. Kuid enne alustamist tuleks mainida, et oma kirjutises lähtun vaatenurgast, mis on omandatud karjääri jooksul, millesse mahtusid nii akadeemilised teadusuuringud puhtas matemaatikas kui ka rakendusmatemaatikaga seotud maailm, kus tegelesin paljude reaalsete probleemidega nii eraettevõtluse kui ka valitsuse heaks.
